Fighting games were long ruled by the Street Fighter series, but as 3D fighters became more prevalent, two Virtua Fighter and Tekken emerged as the new leaders. Virtua Fighter has made its third entry into that series an amazing and revolutionary experience, and many wondered how Namco's seminal 3D brawler could hope to compete with its amazing graphics and deep gameplay. Namco's answer? Tekken 3. It may not be the prettiest fighter on the block, but it is nearly the best. 

Anyone familiar with the series will immediately be right at home with Tekken 3, as it merely refines many aspects of the second Tekken. Many people watch the less experienced players take on the Tekken series, see the button mashing, and believe that this is all that the game has to offer. That is most definitely not so. This is because Tekken 3 offers several different types of gameplay. First, it is highly accessible for those who aren't as skilled in the world of fighters. The surface gameplay is incredibly easy to manipulate, with characters that can do a number of moves by just pressing buttons. 

But the true depth of Tekken 3 is in its reversals, parries, multi-throws, sidesteps, juggles and the basic timing, which is precise to a sixtieth of a second. While Tekken has long been accused of throwing the same characters at us with altered looks, once you begin to play the characters that are supposedly the same, such as Jin Kazama and his grandfather Heihatchi Mishima, you'll find that each of these fighters is extremely nuanced despite their similar basic moves. Every character in the game offers a wealth of diversity, and even if some of them are certainly weaker than others, playing with each is a unique experience if you take the time to learn the moves and timing. 

The characters are certainly a lot of fun. With some returning faces, characters that are holdovers from Tekken 2 but enhanced for this world, and some completely new faces, both the look of the game and the fighting style that its characters represent offer a variety of choices. There's Eddy Gordo, who brings Capoeria into the mix with its dancing, flowing style, and Hwaorang, the student of Baek who brings his own take of Tae-kwan-do to the table. Ling Xiauyo uses a variety of kung fu styles, and Lie Wu Long returns with some crazy animal arts and a drunken boxing style that would make Jackie Chan proud. The roster is impressive, and each character's differences fit into the gameplay mechanics brilliantly, fusing together all aspects that make a fighting game truly spectacular.
